1 suspect dead, 2 cops wounded in central Philippine shooting

MANILA, July 23 (Xinhua) — Police have shot dead a man who grabbed the gun of one of two police officers who were having lunch at a police station in Leyte province in the central Philippines, police said Tuesday.
Initial investigation showed the 44-year-old male arrived at the roof deck of a police station in Javier town, where the two police officers were having lunch on Monday, and suddenly grabbed the service firearms of one of the police officers and fired at them.
One police officer was hit in the chest, while another sustained a gunshot wound on his right lower thigh. A third police officer who was in the area escaped injury after jumping out of the window after sensing immediate danger to his life.
A police officer who rushed to the scene tried to disarm the suspect but was overpowered, prompting another police officer to shoot the suspect. The victims were taken to a local hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead.
Police said that the suspect went to the station on the pretense of surrendering after learning he had an arrest warrant. Police are investigating the incident to look into the motive of the shooting. ■
